How To Choose your wedding photographer & What to look for

Your wedding photographs are the one thing that outlives the day itself. The flowers wilt, the cake disappears, and the playlist fades – but years from now, the photos are how you’ll remember the look on your partner’s face, the toast that made everyone cry, and the people who were there. So choosing the right photographer isn’t a box to tick; it’s one of the most important decisions you’ll make for your day.

Over the years we’ve learned that the couples who love their photos most are the ones who chose their photographer thoughtfully – not just on price or a single pretty image. Here’s what we’d encourage you to look for, whether you book us or someone else.

1. Personality

You’re choosing more than a photographer – you’re choosing someone who’ll be at your side, with your family and closest friends, for the whole day. Personality matters more than almost anything else here, and it should never be overlooked.

The right photographer puts people at ease, reads a room, and quietly captures moments without ever feeling like an obstacle. It sets the tone for the entire day. And it’s a relationship that lasts: by the time you factor in an engagement session, the wedding itself, and your albums afterwards, you’ll likely be working together for a year or more. Make sure it’s someone you genuinely enjoy being around.

2. Value, Not Just Price

Price will always be part of the decision, but it shouldn’t be the only thing that matters. We hear too many stories from couples who chose purely on cost and came to regret it – because when the day is over, the photographs are all you have left of it. Choose someone who’s done this before, over and over, and can deliver amazing images regardless of the circumstances – gear backup, weather conditions and all that.

It helps to think of it as value rather than price. You’re not really paying for hours on the day; you’re paying for the experience of working together, the craft that goes into editing every image, and a finished product you’ll keep for the rest of your life. The cheapest option rarely turns out to be the best one.

3. Albums, Prints and Digital Files

What will you actually do with your images once the day is done? Many couples still want a beautifully designed album – and rightly so. It’s your first family heirloom and a keepsake you’ll have forever. Others want wall art for their home, or a full set of high-resolution digital files to share and print as they like. The best photographers offer a mix, so ask what’s included and what you can add later.

If an album matters to you, a few useful questions to ask:

• How many pages and images come as standard?
• What cover, leather and paper options are available?
• Can the album be upgraded or extended after the wedding?

4. Coverage on the Day

It’s easy to overlook how many hours are actually included. You’ll want your photographer there for the moments that matter – and for most weddings that means somewhere between 6 and 12 hours, depending on the size of the day and your plans.

Be cautious of unusually low prices that come with unusually short coverage. That gap often turns into a hidden cost, and by the time you notice it, the moments are already gone.

5. One Photographer or Two?

Ask whether your day will be covered by one photographer or two, and what each option gives you. A second shooter means someone can capture candid moments and guest reactions while the lead photographer works with you and directs the key shots – which can be invaluable at larger weddings. That said, many excellent boutique photographers shoot solo and capture a wedding beautifully on their own. What matters is understanding the approach and making sure it fits the scale and style of your day.

6. Ask to See a Full Wedding

Anyone can show you their five best frames. The real test is consistency. Ask to see one complete wedding, start to finish – getting ready through to the last dance – so you know the whole day looks as good as the highlights. A photographer who’s proud of their work will be happy to show you, and it tells you far more than a curated gallery ever could.
